This role is functionally indentical to Medical Doctor. The only difference is that it is meant for players new to the Medical department similar to the Technical Assistant and Security Cadet roles.
Make sure to listen to your superiors, primarily the Chief Medical Officer, but also the more experienced Medical Doctors. There's a reason why you're the intern and not them.
